Policies and Procedures

Busses will begin to drop students off around school at 7:50 a.m. On the first day, we will direct students to specific areas of the building. Teachers will be posted at the busses and in the halls to direct your child to these areas.

Sixth Graders will assemble in the Sixth Grade Hall

Seventh Graders will assemble in the Seventh Grade Hall

Eighth Graders will assemble in the Encore Hallway

Breakfast: Breakfast will be served starting the first day of school, and each day after that. Students eating breakfast may enter the cafeteria at 7:45 a.m. where teachers will supervise them until the 7:55 a.m. bell rings. The cafeteria is a quiet place in the morning, reserved for students who are eating.

Lunch: Lunch will be served on the first day. Students are also welcome to bring their lunch if they prefer. While there is no recess, students enjoy socializing during all lunches. We have a cafeteria aide to assist the students. (Parents may check the balance of their student’s account at any time through the parent portal.)

Dismissal: School dismisses at 2:50 p.m. each day. Busses will board on the cafeteria side of the building. Sixth and seventh graders will exit from the front doors, and eighth graders will exit from the cafeteria doors. Please ensure your child knows their bus route number before the first day of school. Students who are picked up will wait on the north side of the building. Once all the students have boarded the busses, we will temporarily stop cars in the front of the school until the busses have left. This generally takes about 2 minutes, and then cars will resume their pick-up route. Students who walk home will wait at the flagpole to be released after the busses leave. A teacher will then see the walkers from the flagpole across the parking lot. Walkers must have a parent permission note on file in the office before they may walk home. The Mehlville School District provides a safe and timely bus system. We encourage all students to ride the bus in order to promote safety and punctuality. Please note that at no time are students allowed to ride another student’s bus.

Lockers will be assigned on the second day of school by the student’s advisory teacher. Students will each have their own locker and lock. A $5 lock deposit is required for the hallway lockers. The deposit will be returned at the end of the school year if the lock is working properly and returned to the office. Students may take their lock home to practice using the combination. Wooden locker shelves are available for purchase for $5 from the office. Please remind your child that school lockers are property of the Mehlville School District and may be subject to inspection at any time.

P.E. Lockers:  provided by student

Student Behavior: Principals will discuss with students appropriate school behavior during the first week of school. We will be reviewing the Mehlville School District Discipline Policies with the students during these discussions. Students will bring the discipline policies home. Please review these policies with your child and sign the confirmation form on the last page. Please return the form to school with your child. We consistently refer to these policies for disciplinary infractions and consequences.

Electronic Equipment: Electronic equipment including cell phones, I-pods, hand-held games, and cameras should not be brought to school. Items such as these are expensive and easily lost or stolen. If a student is using electronic equipment at school, the item will be confiscated and held in the office until the end of the day. Further infractions will result in detention and the phone will be held in the office for a parent to pick up. Depending upon the severity of the infraction, students may be assigned a detention up to an out-of –school suspension. If items are at school, they must be powered off and in the student’s locker during the school day. The Mehlville School District is not responsible for lost or stolen items brought to school.

Dress Code: Please support the Mehlville School District Policy based student dress code at Bernard Middle School. Our building is fully air conditioned, so appropriate attire will always be comfortable. Clothing that reveals underwear, including boxers and bras, stomachs, shoulders, buttocks, cleavage or backs are not acceptable. Shorts and skirts need an appropriate length and must cover what needs to be covered. Skirts should be long enough to reach the bottom of the student’s fingertips, when arms are at their sides. Tank tops, see-through, strapless, spaghetti straps or muscle shirts are not acceptable. Students should not wear pajama pants or slippers to school. Shirts with inappropriate messages are not allowed. The school nurse will provide appropriate clothing for the students whose clothing is deemed inappropriate by the administration.

Tardies: It is important for all students to arrive to school and to each class on time. Tardies for class are counted and a consequence is assigned to students as determined by the team/teacher. Any student who arrives to school past 8:05 a.m. must sign in at the office. Unless the student has a doctor’s appointment with a doctor’s note, he/she will be counted tardy for class. If a student must leave school early for an appointment, he/she must bring written permission to the office in the morning or parents can call the attendance hotline and leave a message regarding time of early pick up. Students with early dismissals are posted on the daily teacher bulletin. If you have to pick up your child early, you must come into the building to sign him/her out in the office. Identification may be requested.

General Bernard Information:

Cashless Cafeteria:

To keep the meal lines moving quickly, there are no cash transactions in the café. The computerized café accounting system allows each student to have his/her own personal account. Each student is assigned a confidential PIN. It is absolutely critical that the students keep this number confidential and not share it with anyone else. Students using someone else’s PIN are subject to disciplinary action. There are deposit boxes conveniently located near the café and main office, and checks should be deposited upon arrival to school. Cash may not be deposited in this manner. If you wish to pay by cash, deposit between 7:45 and 8:00 a.m. with the cafeteria manager. Please make sure that your student’s account is adequately funded, as no credits will be issued. The cashiers will inform students of their balance upon every transaction. You may also view student café accounts via the parent portal on the district’s website. Parents can now place funds into a student account on a charge card. This can be done through the parent portal as well.

Walkers/Drop Off/Pick Up: Students should not be dropped off at school prior to 7:50 a.m. and should be promptly picked up at 2:50 after school. Walkers must cross Forder Road at the crosswalk and with the light.

Parent Portal: The portal is a secure website that is password protected for parents to keep updated about many facets of school. Parents are able to check attendance, grades, lunch account balances, as well as visits to the office. Forms to utilize this valuable resource are available in the office or on the district website. Announcements and the Homework Hotline are also able to be viewed under the Announcement tab. Please notify the office of any email address changes.

Parent Organizations: We have a very active PTO that meets regularly and organizes special events, as well as fundraisers. Our PTO has provided support to Bernard through monetary donations to assist with costs for field trips, assemblies, and other resources needed to enhance the educational experience for our students. Within that organization is a group called Patriot Partners, who volunteer at school in the library and assist teachers. We hope you will be able to support these groups in some way by purchasing logo clothes, participating in fundraisers, and/or by volunteering at school. Emails regarding upcoming events are sent to parents on a regular basis. Let the office know if you would like to be included on their mailing list. PTO information is also located on the Bernard Middle website under the PTO heading.

Mehlville School District Media Exclusion Notification: The Mehlville School District frequently uses the names and photos of its students throughout the year to highlight student accomplishments and communicate the many worthwhile programs taking place in its schools.

If you would like to EXCLUDE your child’s name and photo from being published in school and district materials, please contact the office to obtain a media exclusion form.
